Elevate Your Paddling: Swiss Canoe Paddle Level 2 (EPP 2)
The Swiss Canoe Paddle Level 2—part of the prestigious European Paddle Pass (EPP) framework—is the gold standard for benchmarking your progress as an intermediate paddler. Recognized across Europe, this certification is often required for renting high-end kayaks and serves as proof of your competence in rescue techniques and technical foundations.
This developmental workshop is designed to refine your efficiency and safety skills. It serves as the perfect springboard for specialized courses on the sea or river, providing the rock-solid foundation needed to transition into dynamic, moving water environments.
Assessment Style: There is no high-pressure formal exam. This award is assessed continually throughout the course as you demonstrate the required standards. Our goal is to highlight your areas for growth and support your development until the benchmark is reached.
Course Goal
By the end of this workshop, you will have the confidence to paddle in a group without constant supervision. You will gain the skills to handle unexpected capsizes or changing weather conditions and possess the official recognition of your ability to paddle independently in sheltered waters.
Course Facts
European Recognition: Part of the EPP framework, providing a continent-wide acknowledgement of your skills.
Skill Benchmarking: Clearly defines your ability level according to internationally recognized criteria.
Continual Assessment: Progress at your own pace in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
Repeatable Training: This workshop can be attended multiple times to refresh your skills or prepare for the next level.
Course Specifics
Following the official Euro Paddle Pass framework, we focus on technical mastery, safety, and environmental awareness - the three pillars of the EPP 2.
1. Technical Stroke Refinement
- Core Utilization: Optimizing posture, connection, and power transfer to maximize efficiency.
- Precision Steering: Mastering edging, bow/stern rudders, and low-brace turns for navigating tight spaces.
- Edging with Intent: Learning to use the boat’s hull profile to turn without losing momentum.
- Lateral Movement: Developing effective draw strokes and sculling to move sideways toward docks or fellow paddlers.
2. Safety and Rescue Maneuvers
- Deep Water Rescues: Gaining proficiency in T-rescues and X-rescues as both the rescuer and the victim.
- Self-Rescue Fundamentals: An introduction to reliable solo re-entry techniques.
- Towing Basics: Learning the essential use of contact tows and tow lines for short distances.
3. Theory and Environment
- Equipment Knowledge: An in-depth look at kayak design, paddle feathering, and essential safety gear.
- Navigation & Weather: Understanding the effects of wind (weathercocking) and basic route planning.
- Environmental Ethics: Applying "Leave No Trace" principles for responsible, sustainable paddling.

Coaching Philosophy
At Hightide, we believe in coaching the individual. Our courses start from where you are and guide you toward your personal paddling goals.
For some, this means building confidence to paddle and enjoy nature. For others, it’s about improving efficiency for expeditions or long-distance paddling. It could also involve developing the skills to venture onto the sea or mastering techniques for rivers, rock gardens, and surf.
Whatever your aim, our extensive experience on the ocean and deep understanding of sea kayaking will help you move forward. All our coaches come from a sea kayaking background, hold professional qualifications, and are passionate not just about paddling but also about coaching. We’ve spent years refining what truly makes a difference in the sport and are committed to delivering it in the most effective way—by making you feel the learning.
When you join a Hightide course, you’ll leave with a clear understanding of how to keep improving and a structured way to retain what you've learned. We see our role as creating the right conditions for learning, so your progress continues long after the course ends.
