Accessible Paddlesport Switzerland
Kayaking: a growing discipline in disability sport
Equal access is core to how we work. We’ve looked closely at paddlesports to understand what’s needed so disabled people can take part on equal terms. With many years’ experience in disability and wheelchair sport, physiotherapy know-how, and a range of adaptive equipment, we make kayaking accessible for guests with different access needs. We’re honoured to share our passion—whatever your starting point. Kayaking suits a wide range of abilities because intensity and challenge are easy to scale.
In Switzerland, and around the world
Adaptive paddling is still developing locally, but it’s well established internationally: canoe (Para canoe) made its Paralympic debut at Rio 2016, and the Va’a category was added for Tokyo 2020.
How we support you:
Person-centred approach: plans built around your goals, pace, and communication preferences
Adaptations as needed: seating support, stability solutions, and paddle options
Skilled guidance: trauma-informed, dignity-first coaching and calm water progression
Adaptations & equipment
Independence and choice come first. With the right adjustments, many disabled people can paddle using standard kit. When needed, we add simple, well-tested adaptations so the setup matches your body, goals, and comfort.
Most guests use our regular kayaks and paddles. For some, we tailor the setup using, for example:
Seating & trunk support: high-back rests, foam wedges, hip pads
Stability options: tandem kayaks, wider sit-on-tops, or side floats/outriggers (when appropriate and available)
Paddle aids: grip supports, hand cuffs, prosthesis-friendly attachments, one-arm paddling options
Positioning tweaks: adjustable footrests, knee/leg supports, extra padding
Sensory & communication support: clear briefings, calm water choices, flexible pacing and breaks
Our approach is least-restrictive: start with the simplest solution and add only what’s needed. Sometimes that’s purpose-built gear; other times it’s a creative, low-tech fix from the equipment we already have—whatever works best for you.

Outriggers
They make sea kayaks more stable. Thanks to different mounting positions, they offer more or less support, which makes a measured progression possible. (Suitable, for example, for guests with coordination difficulties, balance problems, fear of capsizing).

High back and side supports
These help people with little to no torso stability by giving more comfort and support, so that the arms can be moved freely (for example suitable for paraplegics with a high level of lesion).

Paddle Bracket
A device to support the upper limb. It takes the weight of the paddle off the person. This allows independent paddling even with little or very unilateral arm activity (for example suitable for hemiplegics, quadriplegics, amputees or non-functioning unilateral upper extremity).

Transfer Table
Simplifies the transition from a wheelchair into a sea kayak.

Support wheels
These wheels simplify transporting the kayak and its occupant from shore to water.

Inflatable cushions
Inflatable cushions are used to fine-tune fit, posture, and comfort in the boat—especially for paddlers who need extra support.
Paddleability Options
Customized Sessions
We will be happy to take the time with you to prepare your paddling adventure and find out what support you might need and which equipment suits you best. This is a great way for you to try out a new sport, to practice it regularly or simply to be able to participate actively in your company’s team event.
Group Activities
We are also happy to accompany entire groups from assisted living institutions, sports groups or members of institutions on the water. A wonderful and very special excursion that can also be combined with a picnic, a lunch menu or Sunday brunch.
