Course description

In our new approach to our coaching courses we have now separated tidal planning and the skills element needed when paddling on the Atlantic coast. This decision was made in order to really progress in the chosen area instead of trying to do too much in a week. We’re confident that with this new focus you’ll make big steps in your development as a paddler.

On our Dynamic paddling course we progressively increase your exposure to challenging conditions in order to give you confidence when the wind increases, the waves get bigger or you have to make a challenging surf launch or landing. The group ratio is kept to 1:4 to ensure we can focus on your individual needs and also enable us to get into more advanced conditions. You’ll get plenty of tips and tricks and skills to work on from our experienced team of Sea Paddlers and Surfers including Dave Storey, our Performance Sea Kayak Coach.

During the week, we use the natural classroom of the surf to develop your skills. The Crozon Peninsula offers a wide range of conditions to ensure we find the right level for you. We start with friendly small waves and build them up through the week developing your technique along the way.

Out at sea we get out into more exposed locations to develop your experience and look at tactics for dealing with wind and waves and applying your skills to the environment. With each day, our aim is to increase your skills and confidence and by the end of the week, you will feel ready to paddle in more challenging locations such as here in Brittany.

Prerequisites

You should have some experience on the Sea and of paddling in Bft 4 winds and the ability to paddle 20km in a day. If you’d like to get some further technical inputs before your trip, we recommend visiting one of our Fine-Tuning courses. This can give you the opportunity to already sharpen your skills in order to put them into practice and get the most of your time out on the sea.

If you’re in doubt, don’t hesitate to get in touch, and Dave can come back to you to discuss your needs or questions.

Coaching Philosophy

At Hightide, we believe in coaching the individual. Our courses start from where you are and guide you toward your personal paddling goals.

For some, this means building confidence to paddle and enjoy nature. For others, it’s about improving efficiency for expeditions or long-distance paddling. It could also involve developing the skills to venture onto the sea or mastering techniques for rivers, rock gardens, and surf.

Whatever your aim, our extensive experience on the ocean and deep understanding of sea kayaking will help you move forward. All our coaches come from a sea kayaking background, hold professional qualifications, and are passionate not just about paddling but also about coaching. We’ve spent years refining what truly makes a difference in the sport and are committed to delivering it in the most effective way—by making you feel the learning.

When you join a Hightide course, you’ll leave with a clear understanding of how to keep improving and a structured way to retain what you've learned. We see our role as creating the right conditions for learning, so your progress continues long after the course ends.
