The question our guides and coaches face most often is “what do you do in the Winter?” When you drop the answer “we kayak”, the room fills up with a dubious silence.
Isn’t it cold? is the most normal reaction. I like to compare Winter kayaking with skiing: If you are happy with being outdoors on the snow then there’s no reason you shouldn’t be happy out on the water as well. At the end of the day, snow of course, is just frozen water. Although we don’t swim in the lake the Winter, in the rare occasion where someone falls in, our drysuits, shoes, paddle gloves and super warm socks keep them warm, toasty and dry. There’s an apt saying from the Northern Europe: `there is no bad weather, there is only poorly dressed people´.
We are, as far as we know, the only providers of Winter Kayaking trips in Europe if not the world, taking our guests into the magical world of snow, glacial water and the mountains.
And Winter on Lake Brienz is something everyone should experience at least once in their lives. In the Winter, we have the lake all to ourselves, you hardly ever see another soul out there and even the ferries stay in the dock. It is peaceful and quiet, one of the most serene experiences one can have. Weather conditions change rapidly and you often get a taste of several seasons within just a couple of hours: misty mornings, rain, sunshine, snow, clouds and clear skies. All equally beautiful seen from the perspective of a kayak out in the lake. No matter what the day brings, it’s always a stunning and memorable experience. It’s a wonderful way to relax and have a day away from the hustle and bustle of the city, busy ski slopes or just to get rid of your travel tiredness.
We are very fortunate by the fact that lake Brienz never freezes. Lake Thun froze once but it was year 1939 so we are not expecting a rerun anytime soon. Winter brings not only silence, but incredible natural beauty around the lake: with snow-capped mountains all around, often snow to the lake shore, you can spot icicles hanging down from the cliffs, mist in several colours of blue and the real feeling of being away from it all. With our local knowledge of the best backdrops, we take our guests to the hidden corners of the lake, enjoy breaks with a warm cup of tea and allow time to soak up this amazing natural paradise.
