Course description

Our level 3 course is for sea paddlers wanting to gain confidence in more challenging conditions and possibly work towards the British Canoeing Advanced Sea Kayak award. As in all our courses, our aim is to work towards self sufficiency and independence in order that you feel confident planning and running your own trips in more advanced conditions.

Planning is a very important element of the course , which you’ll do each day in order to get comfortable with the different sources of information and their use. By the end of the week you should be happy to predict the conditions we would expect and have a good understanding of how to interpret the wind, weather, surf & swell and tides.
Most importantly you’ll get a clear picture of what’s possible and where your boundaries are in order to have a safe day out on the water.

Once out on the water, we’ll look at tactics in wind and waves, safe launching and landing through the Surf, and crossing and utilising tidal flows. The surf zone is always a fantastic classroom for us and we’ll for sure spend time getting more comfortable in the breaking waves, push your boundaries and get a little wet in the process.

You should have experience on the Sea in a variety of dynamic conditions on the Sea with Bft 4 winds and up to 1m Surf and swell and have the ability to paddle 20-30km in a day. If you’d like to get some further technical inputs before your trip, we recommend visiting one of our Fine-Tuning courses whatever your level as preparation and if you’d like to get a grounding in tidal planning, we have 2 theory courses as part of the British Canoeing Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning or CNTP certificate.

If in doubt don’t hesitate to get in touch with the office and Dave can get in touch to discuss it with you personally.

Accommodation is not included in the course fee. It has been a difficult topic during the Corona times and so we have left this open until the course is booked and we decide in the months before the trip. We have run the course from campsites in the past and also in B&B or rented accommodation. We can provide suggestions once we know what the group’s preferences are.

We run this course in different locations around Bretagne. In 2022 we will base our courses in the Perros-Guirec and Île de Bréhat areas to get the most of tides, the Surf and this wonderful area.

Getting there

In order to reduce our environmental footprint, we encourage people to car share and where possible or use public transport. We also offer the possibility to travel with us if that works either one way or both ways depending on the length of our trips.
We can also help with equipment if you want to leave that with us to enable you to take the train.

There are good railway connections to Guingamp via Paris taking around 6.5 hours from Basel.

Meeting Point

The exact meeting point will be confirmed once accommodation has been decided.

Extra day Paddling?

On the 23rd and 30th October we’ll also be running a British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader assessment and need a group for the assessment candidates to lead. So you can add an extra day’s paddling onto your trip here for free.

Including 5 days of Coaching at a ratio of 1:4, one rest day, and one free day paddling in a Leadership Assessment, all necessary equipment where required, BC Advanced Sea and Performance Coach and transport during the course locally.

Excluding accommodation, transport to and from Bretagne and food and drink

Our Coaching Philosophy

At hightide we believe in coaching the individual. On our courses, we take people from where they are at and work towards what people want to achieve.

For some this might be gaining confidence to paddle and enjoy being out in nature, for others it means becoming more efficient in order to paddle expeditions or long distances. It could also mean developing the know how to venture out on the Sea or gaining the skills to play on rivers, around the rocks or in the surf.

Whatever your aim, with our wide experience on the ocean and our detailed knowledge of what makes up sea kayaking, we can help you achieve your goals and bring you forward. All our coaches come from a Sea Kayaking background, have qualifications on the Sea and are passionate not only about paddling but also coaching. We’ve spent years learning what really makes a difference in our sport and are committed to delivering it in the most effective way by making you feel the learning!

When you come to a course with hightide you’ll go away with a better understanding of how to improve and have a structure to remember what you have learnt. We believe our job is to set the conditions for the learning to happen so that when you go home it doesn’t stop.

Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness, Value

As usual, had a great time with Hightide. They never disappoint with their professionalism, responsiveness to the needs of paddlers and they are always good for a laugh. Highly recommended!

Simon Parker

Friendly staff, professional attitude

As a complete stranger to kayaking I did not expect this amount of progress I made in the course of a single day, the topics were carefully selected and built on top of each other, the instructor was easy going and relaxed, without making any compromises to safety.

Private Coaching (3 hours)

Excellent coaching session where I quickly enhanced my technique of turning, apprehend safely a rapid u-turn, optimize my move forward and learn how use the minimum of energy. It is exactly the type of coaching session that I was expecting, in order to get more familiar with my boat and the water element. On the top of that, conditions were perfect and the scenery of the lake is simply magical. Highly recommended.
