Course description

Our Level 2 course is all about putting skills into practice and developing the confidence to plan and run trips on the Sea independently in moderate conditions. Often the thought of paddling in the Atlantic is daunting but we’ll give you all the tools you need to simplify the process and look at the skills and tactics to paddle in moderate water conditions.

Each day you take part in the planning and decide on where is feasible to paddle given the wind, weather, swell and tidal conditions, find suitable places to launch and land and to have a good idea of what conditions lie ahead of us out on the water.

We also look at specific skills in the dynamic moving water environment, such as launching and landing through the Surf and paddling in wind and waves. The surf provides us with an excellent classroom to work on our core skills in dynamic water and we look at how to safely play and have fun in the surf environment. There is also the option to work towards and get signed off for the British Canoeing Coastal Sea Kayak Award during the course, click here for further information.

Brittany provides a magnificent playground for sea kayakers, and we base our courses on different parts of the coast, each providing stunning coastal scenery and a variety of conditions including surf, swell, tides and open crossings.

We also work towards the new British Canoeing Coastal Sea Kayak Award (the old 4 star personal skills) training skills in swell, tide, surf and wind. On top of all this, we promise a great break away combining the best paddling, fun social week with a good dose of humour with your “Swiss German speaking” British Coach & Guide.

For our Level 2 courses you should have some experience on the Sea and be comfortable paddling in and against wind and waves. Your forward paddling and edging skills should be well established on the lake. As preparation you could join one of our fine-tuning courses, which are aimed at all levels to polish your skills before getting back out on the Sea, and our tidal planning courses can also support you in getting the most out of the course before you leave.

If you’re in doubt don’t hesitate to get in touch and Dave can get in touch to discuss where you’re at.

Accommodation is not included in the course fee. It has been a difficult topic during the Corona times and so we have left this open until the course is booked and we decide in the months before the trip. We have run the course from campsites in the past and also in B&B or rented accommodation. We can provide suggestions once we know what the group’s preferences are.

We run this course in different locations around Bretagne. In 2022 we will base ourselves in the Perros-Guirec and Île de Bréhat areas to get the most of tides and this wonderful area.

Getting There

In order to reduce our environmental footprint, we encourage people to car share where possible or use public transport. We also offer the possibility to travel with us if that works either one way or both ways depending on the length of our trips.
We can also help with equipment if you want to leave that with us to enable you to take the train.
There are good railway connections to Morlaix via Paris taking under 8 hours from Basel.

Meeting Point

The exact meeting point will be confirmed once accommodation has been decided.

Extra Day Paddling?

On the 28th March and on the 23rd October we’ll also be running a British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader assessment and need a group for the assessment candidates to lead. So you can add an extra day’s paddling onto your trip here for free.

Including 5 days of Coaching, one rest day, and one free day paddling in a Leadership Assessment, all necessary equipment where required, BC Advanced Sea and Performance Coach and transport during the course locally.

Excluding accommodation, transport to and from Bretagne and food and drink

Our Coaching Philosophy

At hightide we believe in coaching the individual. On our courses, we take people from where they are at and work towards what people want to achieve.

For some this might be gaining confidence to paddle and enjoy being out in nature, for others it means becoming more efficient in order to paddle expeditions or long distances. It could also mean developing the know how to venture out on the Sea or gaining the skills to play on rivers, around the rocks or in the surf.

Whatever your aim, with our wide experience on the ocean and our detailed knowledge of what makes up sea kayaking, we can help you achieve your goals and bring you forward. All our coaches come from a Sea Kayaking background, have qualifications on the Sea and are passionate not only about paddling but also coaching. We’ve spent years learning what really makes a difference in our sport and are committed to delivering it in the most effective way by making you feel the learning!

When you come to a course with hightide you’ll go away with a better understanding of how to improve and have a structure to remember what you have learnt. We believe our job is to set the conditions for the learning to happen so that when you go home it doesn’t stop.

Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness, Value

As usual, had a great time with Hightide. They never disappoint with their professionalism, responsiveness to the needs of paddlers and they are always good for a laugh. Highly recommended!

Simon Parker

Friendly staff, professional attitude

As a complete stranger to kayaking I did not expect this amount of progress I made in the course of a single day, the topics were carefully selected and built on top of each other, the instructor was easy going and relaxed, without making any compromises to safety.

Private Coaching (3 hours)

Excellent coaching session where I quickly enhanced my technique of turning, apprehend safely a rapid u-turn, optimize my move forward and learn how use the minimum of energy. It is exactly the type of coaching session that I was expecting, in order to get more familiar with my boat and the water element. On the top of that, conditions were perfect and the scenery of the lake is simply magical. Highly recommended.
