Core Training

Description

The Coach Award offers discipline specific pathways across all disciplines and introduces the skills and coaching behaviours required for developing performance through progressive coaching. It is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within the discipline chosen. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport, or paddlers looking to develop their skills in the given discipline/environment. As a qualified coach, you will be able to plan, deliver and review progressive sessions safely, effectively and independently.

During the training, we will cover the following topics: assessing athlete or learner needs and then designing and delivering sessions to meet those needs, how to manage the safety aspects of the sport and how to create an enjoyable and safe learning environment. We shall also aim to increase your personal skills to support your own development and learning.

The Core Coach Training module is a 2 day course and will explore different approaches to coaching, understanding and enabling learning, and some core coaching skills. You will also be supported in evolving your personal coaching development plan to enable you to take your learning into practice after the course.

Upon completion of the core training module, the candidate can look towards taking their discipline specific training module to start gaining more knowledge in a specific craft or discipline.

What to bring with you

Swimming wear, a quick drying t-shirt for under the wetsuit, sunglasses, sunhat, sun cream, footwear to be worn in the water (crocs for example), change of clothes, drinks and snacks, packed lunch.

Bus 103 from Interlaken Trainstation Ost or West to Bönigen See (direction Iseltwald). Runs at :05 & :35 throughout the day taking 5 - 10mins. Check your times at http://www.sbb.ch/fahrplan.html. Short walk (3mins) from the Busstop to the Strandbad. This bus is free with your guest card and runs every 30 minutes from Interlaken Ost or West.

By Car
Direction to Interlaken
Take the A8 to Interlaken. Exit at Bönigen, turn left on to Hauptstrasse and take the first exit at the roundabout on to Interlakenstrasse. After the bridge turn right in to Lütschinenstrasse. You will find a small parking area at the end of the road.

Direction to Brienz
Take the A8 to Interlaken and Exit at A26 Interlaken Ost. Follow the signs to Bönigen. When you get to the bridge turn left in to Lütschinenstrasse. You will find a small parking area at the end of the road.

On foot
From Interlaken Ost follow the signs to the boats. Turn right at the river and follow it along the trail signs towards Bönigen. Turn right after the camping sight and walk to the end of the road (around 35mins).

Weather

Please note that our courses and tours run in all weather that is safe for us to paddle in. Often the weather is better than predicted and part of the charm of our sport is experiencing nature with all its faces and even on a rainy day, the views and atmosphere can be beautiful and dramatic. We pride ourselves on having top quality equipment, including Palm longjohn wetsuits and high end paddle jackets to ensure you’re warm and happy whatever the weather. If conditions are unsafe to paddle in we will notify with as much notice as we can.

Discipline Specific Training - Sheltered Water Canoe and Kayak

It is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within the discipline chosen. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport, or paddlers looking to develop their skills in the given discipline/environment. As a qualified coach, you will be able to plan, deliver and review progressive sessions safely, effectively and independently.

The Discipline Specific Training module is a 2-3 day course, and will focus on HOW to coach the discipline specific skills and WHAT you will be coaching. The training explores how to coach technical and tactical skills. The course will help coaches plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help coaches coach some typical athletes/learners relevant to you/your discipline.

Upon completion of the discipline specific training module, the candidate can look towards sitting their eLearning module in preparation for sitting their assessment.

The assessment module is a 1 day course, during which you will as a minimum be assessed on the following: practical coaching, rescue skills, personal skills and background knowledge and understanding of the discipline. There will also be an assessment discussion task.

Prerequisites

Completion of the core training module or an equivalent, the relevant discipling specific training and the eLearning module. If required, any relevant leadership award must also be completed (more details here)
